Albert Einstein, Oppenheimer
Hacking the wise words from the climax of a 2024 summer blockbuster.
And one day, when they've punished you enough, they'll serve you salmon and potato salad, make speeches, give you a medal, pat you on the back tell you all is forgiven. Just remember, it won't be for you... it will be for them.
- Albert Einstein, Oppenheimer

The Story
This quote is from the climax of the 2024 movie, Oppenheimer. Einstein utters these words to Oppenheimer to warn him of the consequences of his achievement, viz. the creation of the atomic bomb.
The Meaning
When you make a mistake, people punish you for it. But over time, people learn to forgive you. There could be two reasons for this:
First, with time, the impact of the mistake lessens, or people gradually forget the details of your wrongdoing.
Second, over time, they feel you've fully paid for your mistake.
So, you might think that, after all this, they will simply forget everything. In truth, that's often what happens, but not for the reasons you might assume. People don’t always forgive you because they've forgotten your mistake or because you've paid the full price for it. Rather, it's because they realize they still need you. But why do they need you?
There are two possible reasons:
First, you benefit them, so they can't let you go. In this case, their forgiveness means they say, “What's done is done. Everyone makes mistakes. Let's keep getting the benefits we derive from you.”
Second, they're afraid you might reveal their true self to others. Deep down, they also know that they wronged you. So, in a way, they're saying, “What's done is done. Everyone makes mistakes. Let’s be friends again so you don’t expose our reality to the world.”
This teaches us that if someone treats us well, we shouldn’t blindly trust them in a fit of emotions. Instead, we should keep a watchful eye on their true intentions.

This is a good deduction of the dialogue from the film. I also feel that sometimes people punish you even when you are not guilty. Then when something wrong happens with them, their conscience makes them aware that they did wrong with you. Now, not everyone has guts to say sorry, so instead, they try to comfort you by telling you the good things about you.
Best explanation!
